Bill Gates has got you under your skin...

A WARNING earlier this month from Microsoft chairman Bill Gates that computers will be implanted in the human body was last week followed by news that George Bush's former Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson is to have a microchip implanted under his skin.

Thompson has joined the board of Applied Digital Solution. The company is the developer of the VeriChip, a miniaturised radio frequency identification (RFID) device that can be implanted under the skin. Thompson has volunteered for a VeriChip to be installed inside him in order to promote use of the technology.

RFID tagging has prompted the anger of civil rights groups even when it is only being used on retail products. The tagging of humans is causing even greater controversy.

Critics say that the chips will allow governments and corporation to track the whereabouts and monitor behaviour of anyone who has been "chipped". Some Christian groups go further and say that the VeriChips are evil.
