Less than a year ago, the competition for the title of the UK’s leading newspaper website was a two horse race. Only Guardian Unlimited and Telegraph.co.uk (owned by the same parent company as The Business) had user figures that were worth measuring, with the websites of the Daily Mail, The Sun and The Times (and their Sunday sister papers) being relegated to the status of also-runs.

Last week, the Daily Mail’s Mail Online made its debut in the race, posting its first ever figures to ABC Electronic (ABCe), the industry-owned online auditor. The numbers were staggering. In July, the site pulled in 11.8m unique users, a year-on-year increase of 162%, propelling it into second place, behind Guardian Unlimited.
